What is a pivot door? Internal steel pivot doors – pros, cons and where they work

A pivot door does not hang on hinges – it turns on a pivot and opens both ways. Here is how it works, where it suits and when another door is the better choice.

“What is a pivot door?” – customers usually ask after seeing one in interior photos rather than in a door shop. No wonder: pivot doors are less common than hinged or sliding doors. We make steel pivot doors to measure, so we describe them from the construction side – how they work, what they offer and what they cannot do.

What is a pivot door?

An ordinary door hangs on hinges along one edge of the leaf. A pivot door has no hinges: the leaf turns around a vertical pivot set in from the edge. The bottom pivot point is fixed in the floor and the top one in the frame or in a head beam above the opening. That is why an open pivot door divides the doorway into two parts – a narrower and a wider one.

A single pivot door with a frame – you can see how the leaf turns around the pivot – a METAL LAB project.

How does a pivot door work?

  • Pivot built into the structure – the whole leaf turns around it. We position it for each door: its size, the weight of the leaf and the opening.
  • Opens both ways – the same leaf can be pushed to one side of the doorway or the other.
  • Self-closing – after opening, the mechanism brings the leaf back to the closed position. The leaf can also be held open.

Pivot door pros

  • A large leaf without hinges – a tall glazed panel in a slim steel frame, with no hinges showing on the edge.
  • Opens both ways – handy in a doorway you use often, for example between the living room and the kitchen.
  • Closes by itself – it is not left ajar; the mechanism closes the leaf, and it can be held open when needed.
  • A larger composition – one or two leaves plus side panels and fanlights – one structure for the whole opening.

Pivot door cons – when to choose another door

  • No lock – we do not fit locks to pivot doors. For a bathroom or a bedroom you want to lock, hinged doors or sliding doors with a hook lock are a better choice.
  • Space on both sides – part of the leaf swings to one side of the doorway and part to the other. There is no room for a cabinet or a chest of drawers right by the opening.
  • Internal only – we design pivot doors for interiors, not as external doors.

Where do internal pivot doors work best?

Pivot doors look best where there is room for the leaf to move and where the door is meant to be part of the interior, not just a divider:

  • Living room, dining room, hallway – wide, busy doorways where the door is a visible part of the room.
  • Study and home office – they separate work from the rest of the home, while the glass keeps the light.
  • Tall openings and structures with side panels – including under a sloping ceiling or a gable, as in the project below.

Pivot doors with or without a frame?

We make both. A frame gives a clear steel outline around the doorway – it suits doors with glazing bars and larger structures with side panels. Frameless pivot doors look lighter: you see the leaf and only a head beam at the top. It is a steel profile with a socket for the top pivot pin – the bottom pivot point is still fixed in the floor.

Pivot door vs hinged door

A hinged door opens one way, can have a lock and needs space only on the opening side. A pivot door opens both ways, closes by itself and has a striking large leaf, but no lock. If the door is mainly there to close off a room – choose a hinged door. If it is meant to be a visible part of the interior in a busy doorway – choose a pivot door.

How to order a made-to-measure pivot door

  1. Measure the opening – width and height. A photo or a hand sketch is enough.
  2. Design the door in the 3D configurator – one or two leaves, side panels, glazing bars, glass and colour.
  3. You receive a free quote with a technical drawing straight away. We check feasibility and choose the mechanism for your door.
  4. Prefer to write? Send us the dimensions, a photo or a sketch – we will prepare a quote by e-mail.

Lead time is usually 5–6 weeks from design approval; we give the exact date with the quote.

Questions and answers

What is a pivot door?

A door that turns on a pivot: the leaf does not hang on hinges but rotates around a vertical pivot set in from the edge. It opens both ways and returns to the closed position by itself.

Do pivot doors close by themselves?

Yes. After opening, the mechanism brings the leaf back to the closed position. The leaf can also be held open.

Can pivot doors be locked?

No, we do not fit locks to pivot doors. Where a door has to be locked – for example a bathroom – hinged doors or sliding doors with a hook lock are a better choice.

Can a pivot door be frameless?

Yes, we make pivot doors with and without a frame, with one or two leaves. The frameless version looks lighter – only a head beam with the socket for the pivot pin remains, and the bottom pivot point is fixed in the floor.

Who installs pivot doors in the UK?

We install with our own team only in the Wielkopolska region of Poland. To the UK we ship the doors ready for installation by your contractor, with the glass fitted; transport is included in the quote.
